If I had a choice, I would live in a rural area.
I would look to see the tall pines. They smell prickly in my throat and nose when I walk outside each and every morning.
In open fields each afternoon my family would fly kites and play volleyball. At night I see the animals curled up. There are good things about living in a rural area.
Sometimes, gunshots from hunters who are hunting deer would wake me. I would not get a wink of sleep. I say, “Stop!” It would be a long drive to go to school and I would be late for morning meeting. Bees buzzing in my ears! There are bad things about living in a rural area.
Even though there are hard things about living in a rural area, the country is for me.

I like living in a rural area, too! Remember living in Danby by the pond? We heard so many bees! I love your collage–it’s beautiful.

I’m with you, Riley. I prefer a rural area myself. Like you, I rather enjoy how prickly the pines smell in my nose. Maybe we can walk in the woods next time you come to Minnesota to vistit.

I have always lived in a rural area and I LOVE it! When I was little there was a whole flock of turkeys that lived in our backyard and my brothers would catch little fish in the stream. Your collage is VERY colorful Riley!

I love this! I live outside of the city and love the trees in my yard. You did such a great job of describing the sounds and smells, I felt like I was at home.

Hi, Riley. Great essay! I especially like the way you describe the smell of pine trees as prickly in your nose and throat. I never thought about it in those words, but that’s exactly what it feels like. I look forward to reading more of your writing!

Nice work, Riley! You’re right, there are good and bad things about living in the country, but my favorite thing is the animals. I love having deer peek in my window and rabbits playing in the yard. Hawks sit in the trees and watch for mice below and even owls visit sometimes.
You’re becoming quite a writer. I bet your parents are really proud of your work and of you. Keep it up!
Love,
Judy

I love the country, too! I would really like to wake to the sound of nature rather than the traffic noise. Birds sing really nice in the morning. I can picture you and me with the dawn light just peeking over the horizon with us watching from the kitchen window of the “up north” woods cabin. I really like your description of the pine smell!

Wow Riley – what a beautiful picture and essay! I too really love tall pine trees – and their prickley smell. My students have really loved all of the wonderful pictures you and your classmates have up in the hallway. They make our school beautiful. Nice job!!

I like the sky in your picture. It’s really bright and pretty. I live in the country and I LOVE it. I do hear gunshots almost every night and it scares me sometimes but I can still sleep. How I fall asleep is that I listen to my radio and then I don’t hear the gunshots.
